Breast Self-Examination and Mammography: Early Detection Saves Lives

Breast cancer is the leading malignancy diagnosed in women across India. Early detection transforms breast cancer from a dangerous illness into a highly treatable, localized condition with excellent long-term outcomes. Women should examine their breasts monthly, 3 to 5 days after the end of their menstrual cycle: 1. Look for changes in breast shape, skin dimpling, or nipple retraction. 2. Use the flat pads of your three middle fingers in small circular motions to feel for firm, non-tender lumps across the entire breast and armpit region. • A distinct, firm lump in the breast or underarm. • Unexplained discharge (especially blood-stained) from the nipple. • Skin thickening, redness, or skin resembling an orange peel (peau d'orange). Annual screening mammograms are recommended for women aged 40 and above, or earlier if there is a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
