Managing Skin and Oral Symptoms During Head & Neck Radiation

During radiation therapy to the head, neck, or chest regions, targeted tissues may develop temporary skin sensitivity or mouth dryness (mucositis). Simple daily habits make a significant difference in comfort. • Wash the irradiated area gently with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a soft clean towel. • Do not apply perfumed lotions, astringents, or alcohol-based ointments to treated skin without prior approval from your radiation oncologist. • Protect the treated skin area from direct sunlight using loose cotton clothing or wide-brimmed umbrellas. • Rinse the mouth frequently with a mild solution of salt and baking soda in lukewarm water. • Choose soft, non-acidic foods at room temperature (e.g., porridge, mashed potatoes, khichdi). • Avoid spicy, crispy, hot, or acidic foods (like citrus fruits) while mouth soreness is active.
