Oral Cancer Awareness: Tobacco Cessation and Recognizing Precancerous Lesions

Oral cavity cancer (involving the tongue, inner cheek, gums, and floor of mouth) is one of the most frequent cancers seen in Southern Rajasthan, largely driven by gutkha, khaini, betel nut, and bidi consumption. • A persistent white patch inside the mouth that cannot be wiped away. • A smooth red patch on the tongue or inner cheek, carrying a high risk of cancerous transformation. • Progressive stiffness of the inner cheek lining causing difficulty in opening the mouth wide (reduced mouth opening). • Any painless sore or ulcer in the mouth lasting more than two weeks. • Pain or burning sensation when eating spicy foods. • Unexplained loosening of teeth or swelling in the jaw area. Quitting all forms of tobacco immediately allows oral tissues to begin healing. Dr. Narendra Rathore recommends prompt clinical screening for anyone with a history of tobacco use.
